Blog on hiatus

Dear lovely readers

It's been a blast over the last few years, but I've decided to put the blog on hold for now, and have archived a lot of the old posts - so apologies if you can't find something you're looking for. Thanks for all your support, and giving a geek girl your time.

Hold Your Breath!

I have mentioned  author Caroline Green before, as she's a friend of a friend, and someone I have got to know better through our shared love of writing. It's always slightly awkward when your friends are also writers because you're scared you won't like their books and will have to spend months politely avoiding the subject, but no such worries with Caroline, whose first book Dark Ride scopped a load of awards / nominations and whose second, Cracks, also won a shedload of praise, marking her out as a YA author to watch, one who writes fantasy tinged YA with enough of a social conscience that it never feels too lightweight.

So I'll be excited to read her next, Hold Your Breath, which is just out. The plot at first might sound similar to Lauren Beurkes' urban fantasy/futiristic magical realism book Zoo City - it's about a girl who has the ability to locate lost things, which ends up causing her more trouble than it's worth - but there the similarities end, as the story is set in a real and recognisable world, and Green has a real gift for writing about young people. If you like smart YA featuring likeable, believeable characters, I'd say you should check her out.
