Giving up on Grimm?

I love the idea of Grimm, the new TV show which features a cop who discovers he is the latest - and possibly last - in a line of supernatural sorta-hunters that goes back to the famous Brothers Grimm. And the tagline - they weren't fairy tales, they were warnings - is genius. (As is 'not your usual suspects') But somehow the show has failed to grab me, and I'm not exactly sure why.

The cast are fine, though I'm finding lead David Guintoli a little bland for my tastes. Silas Weir Mitchell, who was so much fun on Burn Notice (he played the delightfully unhinged Seymour) is especially entertaining as a reformed werewolf: one of the best scenes so far is when he attacks some bad guys and 'gets carried away' and rips an arm off: it was so unexpected and both gruesome and funny that it really worked. But so far nothing is gripping me: the stories, reworkings of fairytales, have either been predictable or fairly unengaging, which is a shame given the clever premise.

In fact the programme is so bland I'm struggling to articulate anything about it, which feels like a problem in itself. Am I wrong? I've been super busy lately so my TV time has been spent multi-screening, which makes it hard to give any new show the attention it deserves. But nothing is telling me this is a show worth sticking with. What do you think?

Do they film this in Canada? Cos then I could use 'it's Grimm up north' joke...

  1. I have finally caught up with the first three episodes and I think it's pretty good. Not amazing but definitely entertaining. I love the idea and the character of Monroe, the slightly surly big bad wolf guy. Nice injection of humour to the series. I will definitely watch more.

  2. MM, I will probably dip in and out but can't see it being a show I *love*. (Tracey)
