OK, so I have mentioned before how much I love Psych, but I seem to be failing in my campaign to convert people. So now it’s back on Universal, I’m going to try again. I’m not stopping till you start watching, people...
5 Reasons why you should be watching Psych
It’s the Mentalist... but funny. Psych’s schtick – that Shawn Spencer is super observant but pretends to be a psychic to solve crimes, actually predates the Mentalist, although the latter show went stellar while Psych putters along being quietly successful. Not that that stops them making digs all of the time, y’know, to show they’re not bitter.
Shawn: You've seen The Mentalist, right?
Robert: Yes.
Shawn: It's like that.
Gus: Except that guy's a fake.
Shawn: Right. If I were a fake psychic, it would be eerily similar.
Gus: Exactly the same.
Shawn: A virtual carbon copy
It has one of TV’s best bromances. Whatever the dating situation of old friends Shawn ‘n’ Gus, it’s really all about them, inseparable from childhood, and the fantastic chemistry between leads James Roday and Dule Hill (a comic revelation after his serious turn in the West Wing) keeps the show fizzing, whatever else is going on.
Gus: I am not massaging those guys. I only use these hands to touch myself. ...Let me rephrase that.
Shawn: Please stop speaking. And no more fist bumps for the rest of the day.
Great guest stars: plenty of names to keep the geeks happy, including Jim Beaver from Supernatural, Mena Suvari, Kevin ‘Hercules’ Sorbo, Cybill Shepherd, Jane Lynch, Cary Elwes, Ray Wise, to name but a few – there’s always a reason to keep your eyes open, you never know who might pop up.

Conrad: In case you missed it Detective, this is my ‘I told you so’ face.
Shawn: Which is kind of indistinguishable from your ‘I thought it was a new episode of Law and Order but it’s a repeat’ face.
Lassiter: A dead body changes things.
Shawn: And that’s your email signature.
It’s geeky: although not strictly a sci-fi/fantasy story at all, it certainly flirts with the genre: storylines have included a corking take on the Exorcist and an episode where one of the characters thought he was a werewolf. Add to that a constant stream of jokes referencing everything from Star Wars to Harry Potter, and titles that tickle the funny bone (my favourites include ‘Meat Is Murder... But Murder is Also Murder', 'The Devil’s in the Details (and the Upstairs Bedroom)', 'You Can’t Handle this Episode' – and my personal fave, 'Murder? ...Anyone? ...Anyone? ... Bueller?') and it’s a veritable geekfest.
Vick: Let me be frank.
Shawn: As long as I can be Dean and Gus can be Sammy.
Gus: Why do I always have to be Sammy?
It’s pop culture-tastic: like I said, the show is packed with pop culture references, but it’s more layered than that, with whole episodes that manage to be both loving pastiches and original in themselves. I defy anyone to watch the John Hughes tribute episode – set in a high school reunion, of course – and not want to stride across a football field with a fist raised in the air.
Shawn: Have you ever seen this ghost?
Hank: Nope, but I've felt them.
Shawn: Was that in an appropriate way?
Plus it’s the Mentalist, but funny. What’s not to love?
